Paediatric General Anaesthesia Service

Since January 1st 2000 the government made it illegal for general anaesthesia to be carried out in a dental practice. Furthermore paediatric general anaesthesia can only be carried out in a hospital which has a critical care unit on the same site. In 2001, 543 Dental Centre was awarded the only Paediatric General Anaesthetic contract in the area by all four local Primary Care Trusts to extract children's teeth in theatre at Hull Royal Infirmary. These sessions are carried out every Saturday morning at the Day Care Unit at Hull Royal Infirmary. The service is provided by a team who specialises in paediatric dentistry along with two paediatric consultant anaesthetist, Dr. John Waterland and Dr. Simon Gower. The service covers children from as far north as Bridlington and down and across into Doncaster.

This service is for very young children or nervous children (up to the age of 16) who are not able to cope with dental extractions under local anaesthetic. The children are assessed at 543 Dental Centre having been referred from their own dentist. Following this an appointment is made for treatment at Hull Royal Infirmary.

Special Needs Anaesthesia

We also treat adults with learning difficulties from the same geographic area. After referral these patients are assessed by the consultant anaesthetists with their carers. If required full dental services can be provided whilst under general anaesthetic at the Hull Royal Infirmary.

Sedation

Sedation services are also provided at 543 Dental Centre for nervous children and adults. Again this service is provided by the consultant anaesthetist at our premises on a monthly basis. The difference between sedation and general anaesthesia is that under sedation the patient is not unconscious but is totally relaxed after the administration of relaxant drugs.
